Alternate Title:
Reasons Why We should
Boycott
The Film Release of
"NINA" and those who agree
By Resident Beauty
“I’ve never changed. I've never changed my hair. I've never changed my color, I have always been proud of myself, and my fans are proud of me for remaining the way I've always been"
~ Nina Simone
There were few motivations for the Event and
Boycott, One was of course my own immediate reaction as a artist/performer with
deep respect for the Iconic subject of the Film "NINA" The other
motivation was Nina
SImone's Daughter, Lisa Celeste Stroud who urged fans of her mother to skip
supporting a mockery of her mom and watch the "What Happened...Miss
Simone" Documentary which Simone's Story is told thru her own voice,
songs, imagery and likeness. The
only entities I know of that cared to defend our heroine of a activist
performer has been the BlogSpot W.W.N.D (What Would Nina Do) a Profound
question as we could all guest by the position of her daughter, Nina would
Protest. Here is why according to the BlogSpot:
"People are always asking "why boycott?" or "what's the
point". I'll be more than happy to explain why it is important to not
support this movie:

1. Nina Simone's family does not
approve of the movie and they
have been very vocal about their displeasure with the script and how they have
been shut out of the entire process.
2. This movie is the erasure
of Nina Simone's image and the image of the women who look like her. Boycotting this movie en masse is a
defiant stance that sends the message that dark complexioned women will not
allow their image to be toyed with anymore. People want to ignore just how big
of a role the media plays in the perceptions that we have of one another.
Taylor Swift said on 60 Minutes that if you're on the radio then you're raising
the next generation. The same goes for actors and film makers and they should
be held responsible for the content they put out.
3. This is a game. Hollywood
wants to see just how far they can go with the whitewashing. Can you not see the pattern? They're
trying to gauge just what level is acceptable to audiences. If we support this
movie with our money it'll open a floodgate of these types of castings. Next
thing you know they'll have Scarlett Johansson
playing Sojourner Truth." ~WWND.BlogSPot.com (What Would Nina Do)
4."You've got to learn to leave
the Table When Love is No Longer being served" a Popular quote by Nina. We have long had
issue with our image portrayals, why continue to support them, create our own
and/ or support those who get it right at least who do not seek to destroy our
image in the minds of viewers.
5. Nina Has Said”I’ve never changed. I've never
changed my hair. I've never changed my color, I have always been proud of
myself, and my fans are proud of me for remaining the way I've always
been" Someone who has never changed to fit popular
culture imagery would not approve of a blackface and fake nose portrayal
as she was so real.
6. "I applied for a
scholarship to Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. I knew I was good
enough, but they turned me down. And it took me about six months to realize it
was because I was black. I never really got over that jolt of racism at the
time." ~Nina Simone, This
is why here in Philadelphia I would like to make this statement, #Stop4Nina, Cities such as
Philadelphia are big enough to know better yet small enough to succeed at
institutionalized racism.
7. To allow the image of Nina Simone to be
destroyed, her story purposely miss represented without a vocal response is
silent approval. Have you ever heard “You must stand for something or you will
Fall for anything"
